IC Information
Character Name: Loki Laufeyson
Character Canon: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Character Age: 1000+, appears in mid-20s
Character Gender: Male
Canon Point: Thor: The Dark World after "death" scene (not real death)
Character Canon History: History via Mavel Movies Wiki (my version of the character is canon for all the movies in MCU, but I have not had a chance to read any of the supplementary comics like "Fury's Big Week")

Character Personality: Loki is petty, cruel, often immature, and a compulsive liar that does not know when to quit with a large streak of mischievousness. Needless to say, this leads to a very bad combination. Loki is a natural with magic, super strength, and near immortality. He can play the villain (as seen in The Avengers) and he can play a hero (as seen in Thor: The Dark World). Loki chooses a side based on his own wants and desires. In Thor: The Dark World when his choice of telling Algrim which direction to go on the stairs leads to Frigga's death, he chooses to ally with Thor to get vengeance. As such he is a selfish hero when he chooses that route.

Loki's pettiness is best illustrated by his reaction to finding out he is adopted. At over a thousand years old and with a history between himself and those who adopted him. He should have been able to move past it. Instead he finds the need to prove himself, and when his plan fails to impress Odin, he throws a tantrum by letting go of the staff and making it appear that he committed suicide. This is also an example of his cruelty, making Frigga, Odin, and Thor, his family believe him to be dead.

His pettiness and cruelty is also on display in the way he fights. Loki fights with tricks and illusions. His weapons of choice tend to be knives, though staves are common, too. He gloats when one of his illusions tricks his opponent, allowing Loki to stab them in the back, or causing his opponent to fall off a cliff. He is definitely a sore winner and an even sorer loser (as seen in The Avengers when he glares at the Thor and reluctantly takes the handle of the Tesseract device to go to Asgard).

Loki is often defined by his maturity, or rather the lack of it. He is capable of acting mature, and often thinks himself to be (he argues with Odin that he would make a better king than Thor as he makes difficult decisions). However, in reality, outside of his mind, he is a spoiled brat. His bratiness is on a more cosmic scale than others and is tempered with a genius intellect that makes him very dangerous. When he feels he is wronged, as with the coronation of Thor, he lashes out. In this case, he brings frost giants to Asgard and leads them into the Weapon's Vault. Though, this is also a good thing as it allows him to show Odin that Thor is too immature to be king, which is only a bonus, really.

As God of Lies, it is really no surprise that Loki is a liar. He is such a good liar, however, that he has been able to trick himself of his own lies. His biggest lie is that he is a monster. This is one that he has allowed himself to believe so strongly that he has made it true, but when he first started this lie, he was a son looking for his father's approval and the protection of his adopted people. These are hardly the actions of a monster, even if, his actions involved regicide and patricide, along with attempted genocide (in perspective, Loki is not human, he is a being adopted into an advanced society that has been mistaken by gods by humanity, and when compared to the actions of benevolent gods of myths and legends, is not the worse it could be).

Many times Loki is given a chance to give up, to stop his own descent into madness. The first time, was right after the failed coronation when he goaded Thor into going to Jotunheim. Had he not done this he wouldn't have found out he was adopted. The next time was after Thor's exile when Odin collapsed in the Weapon's Vault. Odin told Loki that Loki was his his son and if Loki had allowed himself to believe, then he would have never tried to destroy Jotunheim. He could have allowed Odin and Thor to pull him up from the broken remains of the Bi-Frost, accepted whatever punishment Odin thought was proper, instead he let go. He was even given the opportunity several times in The Avengers. Tony and Steve both attempted to get Loki to give up in Germany. Thor tried to get Loki to give up upon his arrival to Earth. Fury and Natasha both tried to get him to give up while Loki was in his cell. Tony even tried one more time when the portal was about to open, and got thrown out a window for his trouble. It was only when he was pulling himself out of the hole he had been left in by the Hulk, with all six Avengers aiming weapons at him, that he finally gave up. He continues with his villainous act, even on Asgard and only disregards it when his actions indirectly lead to Frigga's death.

And through all of this, he treats everything like a joke. It's all just mischief to him. Surprisingly he doesn't care about being evil. He just wants people to suffer and see his plans succeed. There is something broken about his desires, which can be traced back to the discovery of his heritage, but even before that to being in Thor's shadow. Even faking his death is an attempt to get out of Thor's shadow and get Odin's approval. By "dying" valiantly he expected his heroic death to win him heroic favor.

Laufeyson.

The word rattled about in his head, echoing. No, it's a name, not a word, he thought to himself in a moment of pause. His name. The name he was born to. The name he had become.

Laufeyson.

Loki paced his prison cell. Despite being declared, by Odin, no longer a prince, his cell was still rather well appointed. Books, a table and chair, a bed, it was all better than the other cells which were just plain white with a wall that opened out into the hallway (a forcefield kept him inside).

Laufeyson.

Frigga still claimed him, however. Turn, pace the other direction. She tried to reason with him, make his stay more comfortable, and even visited in holographic form since it was forbidden for her to do so in person.

Laufeyson.

He wanted to be mad at her. She sided with Odin so often, but he couldn't do so without lying to himself. Without his barbs stabbing him as well as her. She had always been fair.

Laufeyson.

He lashed out, sending the table to smash against the barrier with a frustrated cry. The barrier glowed gold when the solid object smashed into it. For a moment, all was silent in his mind again.

Friggason.

It wasn't right. He couldn't call himself his mother's son, as much as he wanted to. Odin was no longer his father, but he clung to his mother as his parent. Oh how he wished he could be Friggason or Friggadottir, but even if he shifted shape, he knew what was inside. He knew the monster that lurked just below the skin.

Laufeyson.
